PRUNING
What is pruning?
- Pruning is a horticultural practice involving the selective removal of certain parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots. The primary purposes of pruning are to maintain the health of the plant, improve the quality of flowers, fruit, or foliage and control or direct the growth of the plant.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pruning can be done for several reasons :
1. Health: Removing dead, diseased, or damaged parts to prevent the spread of disease and pests, and to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.
2. Aesthetics: Shaping the plant to maintain a desirable form or size, or to enhance its appearance.
3. Safety: Removing branches that could pose a danger to people, buildings or utility lines.
4. Productivity: Enhancing the yield and quality of flowers, fruit or foliage by promoting new growth.
5. Control: Managing the growth of the plant to prevent it from becoming overgrown or invasive.
Pruning Techniques :
1. Thinning:
- Purpose: To improve light penetration and air circulation with the plant.
- Method: Remove entire branches or shoots back to their point of origin (e.g., main stem or larger branch).
- Application: Commonly used on trees and shrubs to prevent overcrowding and to maintain the plant's natural shape.
2. Heading:
- Purpose: To encourage denser growth and branching.
- Method: Cut back the terminal portion or a branch to a bud or a lateral branch.
- Application: Used on shrubs, young trees, and fruit trees to promote a bushier growth habit and to manage size.
3. Shearing:
- Purpose: To shape plants into formal shapes or hedges.
- Method: Trim the outer edges of the plant uniformly.
- Application: Commonly applied to hedges, topiaries, and some ornamental plants.
4. Crown Reduction:
- Purpose: To reduce the height or spread of a tree.
- Method: Cut back the crown by removing larger branches at their points of origin.
- Application: Used on mature trees to reduce the risk of breakage or to fit the tree within a certain space.
5. Pinching:
- Purpose: To promote branching and fuller growth.
- Method: Remove the tips of young shoots by pinching with fingers or using small scissors.
- Application: Often used on herbaceous plants, annuals, and some perennials.
Benefits of Pruning :
- Improved Health: Removing diseased or damaged parts reduces the risk of infection and encourages healthy growth.
- Enhanced Appearance: Proper pruning helps maintain the aesthetic shape and size of the plant.
- Increased Productivity: Pruning stimulates the growth of new shoots and buds, which can lead to increased flower and fruit production.
- Safety: Removing hazardous branches reduces the risk of injury or damage to property.
PLANNING FOR NEXT ACTIVITIES
1. Mow the Lawn
- Equipment : Gasoline Brush Cutter (1 unit), Hoe (1 unit)
